HISTORY
Zanzibar Teachers’ Union (ZATU) was established and registered in 14th February 2002, with Reg. No. A 008 following on enactment of Labour Act No. 05 of 1995 which separated Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland in terms of Labor matters.
SIGNIFICANCE: Establishment of ZATU marked a historical event that returned teachers of Zanzibar the right to organize after denial of their constitutional right to organize and assembly as an independent group.
PURPOSE: “To unite all teachers to struggle for their labour, social and economic rights as per the UNESCO/EI Recommendations concerning the status of teachers of 1966.
